The tattoo is a Hwa-Tu playing card (month of February) which is the highest card in the suit. I got the tattoo about two years ago down the Jersey shore – don’t remember the artist or shop name but would never go back. It was WAY too heavy metal for me. I got it to cover up another tattoo I had gotten when I was younger. I chose this art because I was born in February.

Kathryn Kim

Kathryn Kim, 30, Texas, Medical field, Korean/Irish. "Kim" is actually my middle name, my mother's maiden name. The tattoo on my leg is the White Tiger ("Baekho"), which represents the guardian of the West and Autumn, and one of the Four Guardians in Korean folklore. If you look at the Tiger closely, you might notice that it is shaped like the entire Korean peninsula. Some say that this depiction illustrates the fierce and courageous tiger "clawing" at China and Russia. Whatever it might be, I found the symbolism and style of art to be beautiful and unlike others I had searched for with regard to the Korean tiger. The best way to see it is to cover his tail, and you might picture the peninsula better. I got this one done in the summer of 2011 by Josh Standley of Element Tattoo, San Antonio, TX. He loves Korean art and spent some time in Seoul, where he learned much more about it.

On my back (started in November 2010), I have a piece that centers around the Phoenix ("Jujak," guardian of the South, Fire element), with the Snake coiled around it. (The Snake is often associated with the Black Turtle, "Hyeonmu," guardian of the North and Winter, symbolizing longevity). My back is still a work in progress, but at this point, the artist is working on the details. The picture you see is before it was colored in it's entirety. The black/white background represents winds. The only symbol I do not have yet is the Blue (or Azure) Dragon ("Cheongnyong," guardian of the East and Spring). Maybe someday soon.... This is the work of Jedi Reid of Element Tattoo in San Antonio, TX. He is absolutely a master at his craft.

Charles

Charles "Chuck" Fridline, 30, Iraq, Korean/Caucasian.
I am in the US Army as a Criminal Investigator and currently deployed in Iraq. My Korean family is from Pusan and I was raised with a lot of my heritage. I do speak Hangul but cant read or write, besides what is written on my skin.
The first tattoo is on my left arm which reads, "Song (Korean family name) Charlie (real name)" I got it while stationed in Brussels, Belgium as a Protective Agent for the Military Rep to NATO Headquarters. I got it in down town Brussels (cant remember the tattoo parlor or artist name) on 10 June 2007. I got this to honor my Korean family as the first born male and my mother is the oldest of 6 females. I got my real name because I was named after my Great Grandpa who passed away the day I was born and my real name is very special to my and the only person to ever call me by it was my Grandpa who passed away two months before I got the tattoo.
The second tattoo is on my right arm which reads, "Dream as though you will live forever, live as though you will die tomorrow", the characters in red are "Live", I got this tattoo while also in Belgium on 18 Jan 2008. I got this because it represents how I live my life and cherish every moment to the fullest.
The third tattoo is on my left pec above my heart. I got this done while on leave from Iraq on 9 Aug 11, I went back to Belgium and had a fellow Soldier do it for me, who wishes to remain unnamed. I got this tattoo above my heart because it reads "It is better to have loved, then to have never loved at all". I was engaged about a year ago and due to my own fault lost the love of my life. I have accepted it and cherish the fact that I got to experience love. It is a reminder to me that I never want to be the way I used to and hope that I will find love again, yes I know very mushy mushy LOL.
I do want to make a full mural on my right arm with a Korean theme.

FYI- I also have a funny tattoo on my right butt cheek that looks like a postal stamp that reads "Made in Korea", which I will not send a photo in, but I was conceived in Korea while my father was still stationed there.

Megan Stevinson, 27, Korean/Black.
The tattoo on top was my third and I thought long and hard about getting it and where to get it. So I settled on my left wrist; it says "MADE IN KOREA" simply because I was! I thought it was clever and represented me well. A lot of people ask me was I really "made" in Korea. And, yes, I was conceived and born on Korean soil, and PROUD of it!! I got this Tattoo in Denver, CO in 2007.
The one on the bottom is my Korean birth name. It means a lot to me because I was adopted as a baby and this is one thing that connects me to my birth mother. My Korean name is "Lee Ga Young." This was my first tattoo and I was scared to get it but had it in my head for three years and I knew I wanted it. I got it in Auburn, AL in 2005 for my 21st birthday.

It is the Korean flag and my mom's name.
I got the tattoo in 2008 and the original design was done by a really good friend of mine named Jay Bailey, who is also black and korean like myself.
When I saw it I knew I had to have it. The tattoo artist is also a very good friend of mine named Won Joon who happens to be half korean and half white.
He actually did this tattoo at his house in Banning, Califonia. The tattoo is a picture of the symbols on the Korean flag (with a little added flare) and my mother's name underneath.
It represents my Korean heritage and the strongest, kindest, woman I know, my mommy!
