2011 KBL Ethnic Draft Results

The Korean Basketball League (KBL) held it’s third Ethnic Draft on January 31, 2011. Unfortunately, none of the available players were chosen by KBL teams this year.

The Ethnic Draft was implemented to allow mixed Koreans an opportunity to play in the KBL and not have to be considered a “foreign” (non-Korean) player. The current rule allows for one “Ethnic” player per team.

Larry Boyd, Joseph Fontenot, Anthony Gallagher and Adrian Scott were the four available draft applicants in the 2011 Draft.

Boyd played basketball at Killeen High School and for Air Force Basketball Intramural leagues (Kunsan Air Force Base), Fontenot at Connors State, Gallagher at Evergreen State and Scott at Texas State and Asian-American Intramural Leagues.

Fontenot was the only returning applicant from previous drafts (2010).

It had been rumored that former Wake Forest point guard Tony Rutland – himself a former KBL player in 1999 – would participate, but he did not this year.

We had just posted our 2009 Ethnic Draft Feature right before this 2011 Draft and had been curious how the third draft would turn out. The initial 2009 Draft had five players selected but the 2010 Draft had only one with both drafts featuring seven applicants each. With no selections made in the 2011 Draft, you would think that the KBL may need to rethink or revise the Ethnic Draft since the number of players selected is going downward each year. It might make sense to just allow the applicants into the regular draft at some point.

We have yet to see anything regarding a 2012 Ethnic Draft but we’ll continue to follow the KBL and future draft policies.
